Fred Harrison

CEO - Ritchies IGA

Ritchies commenced business in 1870 and remain an Australian owned company.  From humble beginnings, Ritchies has grown to be the leading independently owned, licenced supermarket chain in Australia with stores in QLD, NSW and Victoria.  With the recent acquisition of many of the Fishers Group of stores, Ritchies now operate more than 70 supermarkets and liquor stores – making Ritchies the largest Independent in Australia.

Fred Harrison began his career as a casual with Ritchies in 1975, whilst still at Frankston High School and worked his way up to management before being appointed as General Manager in 1987 and then as Chief Executive Officer in 1994.

Fred Harrison understands better than most, the essential ingredients that make Australian retail successful.  Upon his appointment as CEO, Fred recognised the stores needed a fresh outlook to stay current and for the business to continue to grow. With the assistance of a great team, he set about reinvigorating existing stores with upgrades and remodels, providing competitive pricing, ensuring store standards are equal to or better than the chains, specialising in fresh foods and providing customers with outstanding service.  Fred also talks passionately about Ritchies providing “clear points of differences, compared to the chains.”

The Community Benefit program has been a key element of Ritchies continued success. Put simply, customers are able to sign up to support a local club, school or charity of their choice, and a percentage of their purchase is donated to their chosen organisation.  To date, more than $47 million has been donated back into the community.

Fred’s passion for the Supermarket and Liquor industry and his devotion to delivering outstanding customer service has made him one of Australia’s most successful retailers. In July 2016, Fred was inducted into the prestigious IGA Hall of Fame. Named after the Chairman of IGA Inc., this honour recognises outstanding achievements and contribution to the Australian independent retail grocery industry.
